“Environmental education in India: From mainstream schools to indigenous communities”

This month we broaden our focus to learn how THECA's environmental education mission is practised elsewhere.

Pallavi leads the Environmental Education portfolio at ATREE (The Ashoka Trust for Research in Environment and Ecology), one of India’s leading independent environmental research institutions.

She steers a national digital library of environmental learning resources for India called The S.N.A.I.L Network; advances place-based environmental education initiatives for K–12 learners, and heads ATREE Academy’s Non-Degree Program—expanding access to conservation and sustainability learning for diverse audiences across the country.

Previously a faculty member at Azim Premji University, she is passionate about the role of education in shaping a more just, humane, and sustainable society—one that transcends disciplinary and cultural boundaries.

Pallavi will Zoom in from Bengaluru to share powerful stories and learnings from her work in place-based environmental education across diverse contexts in India.

Her work is driven by a simple but urgent belief: when children engage directly with hands-on, local, ecological exploration, inquiry, and action—they become more capable of transforming their own neighbourhoods and regions.

Drawing from inspiring examples across urban and rural India, she will offer a hopeful and practical glimpse into what meaningful environmental action can look like—when learning begins with place.
