A volunteer group based at The Hut in Chapel Hill at the foot of Mt Coot-tha, promoting environmental education, conservation, research and community participation.

What We Do

  • Education

    From year-round bird-walks, summer-time night-walks to children’s activities and monthly presentations by topic experts, we offer opportunities for observing and learning about our natural world suitable for all ages.

  • Conservation

    For over thirty years THECA volunteers have undertaken revegetation and weeding around The Hut and at the Summit, in collaboration with Council’s Habitat Brisbane program, along with other conservation activities such as cane-toad tadpole trapping in Cubberla Creek.

    We host regular community morning teas, hold monthly meetings open to all, celebrate our local artists with THECA’s annual Art Show, make The Hut available to other groups, and welcome new community partnerships.

    Supporting research into our local environment has been a key THECA activity from the start. From monitoring local ecosystems to our University Scholarship program, we aim to better understand our environment.

THECA News is a quarterly newsletter since 1999, featuring updates on talks, excursions, activities, and member-written articles on environmental issues.

THECA hosts community Forums every 12-18 months on key environmental topics. Since 2001, 12 Forums have covered issues like waterways protection and bushfire management, averaging 100 participants.
